New Balance have a solid reputation for catering to the wide foot population, however we found these weren't quite in the same league as we'd expect. Of course this is only a problem if it's a true wide fit that you're after, but other than that, let's get down to what we thought of the New Balance Nitrel V3.

First up, a great looking trail running shoe with some cool colour options if you're wanting to make a statement! Out of the box we found these reasonably comfortable as you'd expect from New Balance, the toe box was sturdy and the mid-foot was snug, again we wouldn't have picked this from a brand typically known for wider footwear. Immediately the midsole had a rigidity to it that is a fine line between protection (on rugged terrain) and discomfort, so we were interested to see how they performed once we put them across some terrain.

We tested these shoes over a range of trails and found them to be up to the task on relatively dry and less technical trails, but once things got a bit wetter and challenging we found ourselves a little void of confidence underfoot, with rocks and obstacles proving a little too much for what these shoes are capable of. Of course this all comes down to what you want from your trail shoes and if it's an affordable, lace up and go trail shoe for less challenging trails and terrains then this is still a good investment, but if you like to push the limits a bit more (like we do here!) and need something with a bit ore in the traction department, we'd suggest something a little more advanced.
